The office of Secretary of State in the 47 United States which have that position, is generally an administrative one. The duties vary. Three states, Alaska, Hawaii, and Utah do not have the position of SOS. In 35 of the 47, the position is elected, but in 12 states, it is appointed and not accountable to the people.
Very seldom has a Secretary of State become embroiled in controversy. It is usually a job that is kind of “under the radar”.
Until George Soros got involved. As a writer, I get weary of that name because he is behind so much of what is wrong with our country today. This time, I want to tell you about how he weaponized the office of SOS>
In 2006, in preparation for the election of Barack Obama (how did they know that, two years before the election?) which was expected to be a very close one, Soros decided to build a “firewall”, as Politico termed it, to “protect administrative interests” in some key states. IA, MN, NV, NM, and OH where the 2004 Bush win was the slimmest.
Affiliated with the Democracy Alliance, a group of wealthy California liberals, who were required to donate a minimum of $200,000 per year to groups and candidates recommended by the Democracy Alliance, sent their money to the targeted SOS’s. It worked. All five SOS positions were turned , and the party felt more secure. Now they would be able to focus on voter registration and turnout, instead of those silly Republican goals of eliminating voter fraud.
Even more important, those Dems in charge of their states’ elections were now the source of interpretation and administration of election law.
Early on, the SOS project elected MN SOS, Mark Ritchie, who kept the votes open for two weeks, as I recall, until Al Franken was elected in 2008. Helpful. How very helpful.
Michigan SOS, Jocelyn Benson and PA’s Karen Bookvar were later products of the same effort. Benson had worked for the Southern Poverty Law Center, the NAACP in voting rights and election law, and their Legal Defense Fund. By the time she became MI’s SOS in 2018, she was well-steeped in deep left ways.
Bookvar had been through similar liberal upbringing. Before she became PA SOS, she advised Gov Tom Wolfe on “election modernization”. She was appointed acting PA SOS in 2019, and became the co-chair of the elections committee of the National association of Secretaries of State, three months before her appointment was confirmed.
Both women have always worked toward maximizing the number of votes whether on not those ballots were valid. We saw the havoc they created in their states in the 2020 election.
The pattern is clear. Elect leftist SOS’s, then David Becker’s ERIC system of voter roll stuffing took over after Soros shut down the SOS Project. I believe they were blended. as their goals are exactly the same. Maximize registrations whether or not a person had the right to vote, and create millions of phantoms, registered at non-existent addresses, whose “votes” could be used anywhere, any time. Soros contributed to the Pew Charitable Trust, which went on to fund the development of ERIC.
As the lines were blurred and eventually nearly disappeared, between “D” and “R”, more and more RINO SOS’s joined the fray. In that batch, I would list Byrd of FL (Thanks, FRA, for bringing him out!); Pate, IA (who agreed to do the ceremonial resignation from ERIC along with Byrd last spring. I have my suspicions about several more, some of which would surprise you. I will accuse none, but will write about a lot in the coming weeks. You can see the other obvious ones without my help.
If you know anything about your own SOS, please tell me. If your head is spinning, that’s what they want. More groups, more “alphabet” projects, more players and funding sources, and soon no one but them will be able to follow their moves. They hope.
Now we see Becker back in the fray, with his Election Officials Legal Defense Fund lobbying for harassment bills to be passed in states where good election integrity activists are out front with proof of the fraud.
Nothing should surprise us anymore. Don’t let them. I’ll be back with more, and we’ll keep at them.
Blessings,
Kat
Thanks to our WV SoS Mac Warner, elections are squeaky clean in this state. He understands the recent voter chicanery and fraud going on elsewhere and despite hit pieces and name-calling by some publications and loony lefties works hard to ensure voter integrity. I hope his brother Kris gets elected to that office as Mac is running in a heated race for governor.
